In Hamar there's a strict division of labour in terms of sex and age. Women are responsible for childcare, cooking, sweeping, grinding, milking, collecting firewood and water and growing crops. While girls tend to stay at home mastering the domestic duties, young men spend much of their time living in distant grazing camps, protecting their cattle from wild animals and raids by other tribes. Older men spend more time in the village tending to their beehives, building fences and attending community meetings.
